Adopt a Mindful Approach to Eating

The former presenter of RTÉ TV’s Health Squad programme, Paula Mee, is currently the consultant dietitian in the production team for the TV3 series Doctors in the House. She writes for the Irish Times Health Supplement on Tuesdays and also runs a dietetic clinic in Medfit Proactive Healthcare in Blackrock, Dublin. Paula’s presentation in Letterkenny was about ‘Simple Steps to Mindful Eating.’

“If you skip a meal or don’t eat because you’re trying to manage weight or lose weight, then you will become ravenous and ultimately you risk overindulging. It is far better to try to be mindful about how much you are eating, why you are eating and what you eat,” said Ms. Mee. “The mindful approach to eating involves food awareness skills such as recognising when you are hungry and full, reflecting on the health consequences of particular foods and evaluating portion sizes. It can take 20 minutes for our stomach to tell our brains we are full, so slow down and enjoy your food."
