Healther Diets - Tips for Lasting Success

  1. If trying to lose weight or get healthier, beware of fad diets which tend to be extreme and unbalanced.  A healthy, balanced diet and a physically active lifestyle is the recommended approach for effective weight management.
  2. Try keeping a food diary to track your dietary habits and to identify barriers to healthy eating. Make positive changes which will help you follow a healthy and balanced diet and lifestyle. Remember to be realistic, with gradual but effective changes being key to long-term success.
  3. Get cooking and plan ahead! Preparing and cooking your own meals will give you control over what you eat and is a great life-long skill. Batch cooking healthy meals for the freezer can help you stick to your healthy eating plan on busy days.
  4. Enjoy the support and encouragement from family and friends by getting them involved in activities e.g. a healthy family meal or a pleasant walk with friends.
  5. Follow healthy eating guidelines - familiarise yourself with the food pyramid and other reliable sources of information from qualified professionals.

The Department of Health’s Food Pyramid categorises foods into six different groups and provides guidelines on the number of servings to be eaten from each food group on a daily basis. It is advised to choose a variety of foods from each of the bottom four shelves every day to get a good range of vitamins and minerals.

The Food Pyramid applies to individuals from the age of five years; younger children start with smaller and fewer servings which should increase up to these guidelines in accordance with the child’s own growth and appetite.
