FARMER AMBASSADOR

Christopher Tuffy

Dairy farmer Christopher Tuffy represents Sligo and was crowned FBD Young Farmer of the Year in 2022. Upon completing his Leaving Cert in 2008, Christopher spent a year at Mountbellew Agricultural College and then Kildalton Agricultural College where he completed the Dairy Herd Management course. From there, he accepted a life-changing placement in New Zealand. When an opportunity came up to lease a block near Sligo town, Christopher’s father backed him and he runs this farm milking 150 cows near Doonally. Christopher supplies Aurivo Co-op and works off a fully grass-based system.
“I am really delighted to be a new NDC Ambassador. Every time you see agriculture or dairy farming mentioned in mainstream media, it’s something negative and we’re all being portrayed in a negative light. It would be great to show the opposite of that. To show all the good things that dairy farmers like myself are doing.”

Miriam, farmer and mum of four, believes that Women in Dairy is about recognition – her grandmother worked on the farm but would never have considered herself a farmer. “It’s about women standing up and saying, hold on, we’re doing this too, and being acknowledged for it.” She’s also keen to see country kids being encouraged to participate in dairying and to be proud to be part of it.

“The cow is in charge of everything she does – she has to come to the robot, it’s a simple as that.” Niall talks about his move to the robotic milking system, better for him, better for his family who work with him but, above all, better for the cow. The robotic system monitors cow health and milk quality, and enables Niall to manage his pastures to ensure the best grass for his animals.
