FARMER AMBASSADOR

James Flaherty

James Flaherty from Castleisland, Co Kerry will join NDC’s troop of exceptional dairy farmers who continue to spread the message of sustainable dairy production across Ireland. The family have farmed here since 1850 and James is the next generation to carry on the farming tradition. It was always a Dairy farm and in 2020 the decision was made to install a milking robot and they haven’t looked back since.
‘There is a proud farming tradition in our family. I am the seventh generation to run our Dairy farm. However this would not be possible without the ongoing support from both my parents. They are actively involved in all aspects of the farm. My Grandfather and Father were the first in Kerry to implement the paddock system. They were very much ahead of their time. Farming is definitely challenging and changing for so many reasons. The technology that I’m using is making life a bit easier . It gives a better work-life balance. I am delighted to be involved in this programme and to get the opportunity to showcase new technologies and new farming practices such as the integration of multi-species swards.’

Miriam, farmer and mum of four, believes that Women in Dairy is about recognition – her grandmother worked on the farm but would never have considered herself a farmer. “It’s about women standing up and saying, hold on, we’re doing this too, and being acknowledged for it.” She’s also keen to see country kids being encouraged to participate in dairying and to be proud to be part of it.

“The cow is in charge of everything she does – she has to come to the robot, it’s a simple as that.” Niall talks about his move to the robotic milking system, better for him, better for his family who work with him but, above all, better for the cow. The robotic system monitors cow health and milk quality, and enables Niall to manage his pastures to ensure the best grass for his animals.
